       Letras e números costumam ser vistos como símbolos opostos, correspondentes a sistemas de pensamento e linguagens completamente diferentes e, muitas vezes, incomunicáveis. Essa perspectiva, no entanto, foi muitas vezes recusada pela própria literatura, que em diversas ocasiões valeu-se de elementos e pensamentos matemáticos como forma de melhor explorar sua potencialidade e de amplificar suas possibilidades criativas.
        A utilização da matemática no campo literário se dá por meio das diversas estruturas e rigores, mas também através da apresentação, reflexão e transformação em matéria narrativa de problemas de ordem lógica. Nenhuma leitura é única: o texto, por si só, não diz nada; ele só vai produzir sentido no momento em que há a recepção por parte do leitor. A matemática pode, também, potencializar o texto, tornando ainda mais amplo o seu campo de leituras possíveis a partir de regras ou restrições.
         Muitas passagens de  Alice no País das Maravilhas  e  Alice através do espelho, de Lewis Carroll,  estão repletas de enigmas e problemas que até os dias de hoje permitem aos leitores múltiplas interpretações. Edgar Allan Poe é outro escritor a construir personagens que utilizam exaustivamente a lógica matemática como instrumento para a resolução dos enigmas propostos.
         Explorar as relações entre literatura e matemática é resgatar o romantismo grego da possibilidade do encontro de todas as ciências. É fazer uma viagem pelo mundo das letras e dos números, da literatura comparada e das ficções e romances de diversos autores que beberam (e continuarão bebendo) de diversas e potenciais fontes científicas, poéticas e matemáticas.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, earlier said he expected Irma-related damage to St Martin and another French overseas collectivity, Saint Barthélemy (St Barts), would be “considerable”. France’s overseas minister, Annick Girardin, was travelling to the Caribbean with emergency teams and supplies. The most recent island to be hit was Puerto Rico, where lashing winds and rains have left most of the population without power and tens of thousands without water. Images from the island showed flash flooding, and hospitals were forced to rely on generators.
