        The effect of social media use on children is a fraught area of research, as parents and policymakers try to ascertain the results of a vast experiment already in full swing. Successive studies have added pieces to the pu    zzle, fleshing out the implications of a nearly constant stream of virtual interactions beginning in childhood.

        A new study by neuroscientists at the University of North Carolina tries something new, conducting successive brain scans of middle schoolers between the ages of 12 and 15, a period of especially rapid brain development. 

        The researchers found that children who habitually checked their social media feeds at around age 12 showed a distinct trajectory, with their sensitivity to social rewards from peers heightening over time. Teenagers with less engagement in social media followed the opposite path, with a declining interest in social rewards.

        The study has important limitations, the authors acknowledge. Because adolescence is a period of expanding social relationships, the brain differences could reflect a natural pivot toward peers, which could be driving more frequent social media use.

        “We can’t make causal claims that social media is changing the brain,” said Eva H. Telzer, an associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and one of the authors of the study.

        But, she added, “teens who are habitually checking their social media are showing these pretty dramatic changes in the way their brains are responding, which could potentially have long-term consequences well into adulthood, sort of setting the stage for brain development over time.”

        A team of researchers studied an ethnically diverse group of 169 students in the sixth and seventh grades from a middle school in rural North Carolina, splitting them into groups according to how often they reported checking Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat feeds.

        At around age 12, the students already showed distinct patterns of behavior. Habitual users reported checking their feeds 15 or more times a day; moderate users checked between one and 14 times; nonhabitual users checked less than once a day.

        The subjects received full brain scans three times, at approximately one-year intervals, as they played a computerized game that delivered rewards and punishment in the form of smiling or scowling peers. While carrying out the task, the frequent checkers showed increasing activation of three brain areas: reward-processing circuits, which also respond to experiences like winning money or risk-taking behavior; brain regions that determine salience, picking out what stands out in the environment; and the prefrontal cortex, which helps with regulation and control.

        The results showed that “teens who grow up checking social media more often are becoming hypersensitive to feedback from their peers,” Dr. Telzer said. Social sensitivity could be adaptive, showing that the teenagers are learning to connect with others; or it could lead to social anxiety and depression if social needs are not met.

        “They are showing that the way you use it at one point in your life does influence the way your brain develops, but we don’t know by how much, or whether it’s good or bad,” said Jeff Hancock, the founding director of the Stanford Social Media Lab, who was not involved in the study. He said that many other variables could have contributed to these changes. He described the paper as “a very sophisticated piece of work,” contributing to research that has emerged recently showing that sensitivity to social media varies from person to person.

          Quem não sabe o efeito produzido à beira do rio pela notícia da declaração da guerra entre o Brasil e o Paraguai?

           Nas classes mais favorecidas da fortuna, nas cidades principalmente, o entusiasmo foi grande e duradouro. Mas entre o povo miúdo o medo do recrutamento para voluntário da Pátria foi tão intenso que muitos tapuios se meteram pelas matas e pelas cabeceiras dos rios, e ali viveram como animais bravios sujeitos a toda a espécie de privações.

          Coisa terrível que era então o recrutamento!


         Esse meio violento de preencher os quadros do exército era ao tempo da guerra posto em prática com barbaridade e tirania, indignas dum povo que pretende foros de civilizado.

        Suplícios tremendos eram infligidos aos que, fugindo a uma obrigação não compreendida, ousavam preferir a paz do trabalho e o sossego do lar à ventura de se deixarem cortar em postas na defesa das estâncias rio-grandenses e das aldeolas de Mato Grosso.

         Rebeca Andrade superou a si mesma, fazendo história. Aos 22 anos, entrou para o Olimpo da ginástica mundial, ostentando a medalha de prata no individual geral feminino e subindo ao topo do pódio olímpico na prova de salto. Sua caminhada começou graças a uma tia que viu seu talento e a apresentou à técnica de ginástica da cidade. Não demorou para que ganhasse o apelido de “Daiane dos Santos 2”. A atleta dá sequência a um legado iniciado por ginastas como Daniele Hypólito e Daiane dos Santos, respectivamente, primeira medalhista e primeira campeã em campeonatos mundiais. Rebeca tornou-se a primeira medalhista e campeã olímpica do Brasil na modalidade. Daiane afirmou que admira a jovem atleta, cuja vitória é permeada por simbolismos importantes. “Durante muito tempo disseram que as pessoas negras não podiam fazer alguns esportes, e a gente vê hoje a primeira medalha, de uma menina negra. Tem uma representatividade muito grande atrás de tudo isso”, falou. A ginasta Nádia Comaneci, dona da primeira nota 10 na ginástica, parabenizou a brasileira em suas redes.

    No tempo em que assistíamos
    televisão no meio da praça


          O que eu vou contar nestas próximas linhas não fará sentido para os leitores mais jovens, mas houve um tempo em que assistíamos televisão no meio da praça. Nessa fase, a propriedade de aparelhos ainda era restrita às camadas mais abastadas.

          Seja no meio de uma praça pública, seja na sala de casa, a televisão cumpriu um importante papel de sociabilização, mesmo que de forma mitigada. Isso porque, ao contrário do que acontecia na antiguidade, as praças não eram (como ainda não são) espaços de convivência pública ativa, no máximo um lugar para gastar o tempo, bater um papo. Naqueles tempos, os aparelhos de TV nas praças reverteram um pouco dessa lógica.

          Ao que parece, está se inaugurando no Brasil um novo tempo no campo da pesquisa sobre a televisão e sua inserção sociocultural nas camadas populares.

         Essas pesquisas não podem e não devem ignorar, especialmente, a intensa concentração desses veículos nas mãos de poucas famílias e grupos econômicos, sob o risco de a televisão no Brasil continuar centrada num modelo antidemocrático, antimediador, intransitivo, tendo como consequência direta a limitação crescente da participação da população nas instâncias públicas de decisão (a televisão é uma concessionária de serviço público), só que agora com o agravante da falsa sensação de que a comunicação se tornou mais democrática com a internet.

           Que a televisão permaneça por muitos e muitos anos, mas que o seu atual modelo tenha seus dias contados! Quem sabe com isso um dia voltemos para o meio da praça, não mais para assistir TV, mas para fazermos valer uma cultura de participação política realmente ativa e instruída, como uma democracia de fato merece.
