    WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION?

Whether you use social media to connect with friends and loved ones, watch videos, or simply “kill time,” the popularity of this pastime has increased significantly over the last decade. This is especially the case in children and teenagers, as well as young to middle-aged adults.

So, how does a seemingly harmless hobby turn into an “addiction”?

Like other types of behavioral addictions, using social media can influence your brain in harmful ways. Moreover, you may use social media compulsively and excessively. You can also become so accustomed to scrolling through posts, images, and videos that it interferes with other areas of your life.

Not everyone who uses social media will develop an addiction. Since this activity is becoming more accessible to more people, though, more people may develop an addiction to social media at some point in their lives.

How do you know if you have social media addiction?

A mental health professional can help you determine whether you truly have social media addiction or just really enjoy using it a lot. But there are a few key differences between social media addiction and a habit that you enjoy. These include:

negative effects to your job or schoolwork due to the overuse of social media.

increased use during other activities, such as hanging out with friends and family, or while eating.

increased reliance on social media as a way to cope with problems.

restlessness and irritability whenever you’re not using social media.

    • anger whenever social media usage is reduced.

How can you decrease social media use and prevent its addiction?

Consider the following tips to help you achieve a healthier balance with social media:

Turn off your personal phone during work, as well as during school, meals, and recreational activities. You can also adjust the setting on each social media app so you can turn off certain notifications.

Set aside a certain amount of time dedicated to social media per day. Turn on a timer to help keep you accountable.

Take up a new hobby that’s not technologyrelated. Examples include sports, art, cooking classes, and more. Let yourself be in control of your life — not your social media account.

    TEXT 3

    A pandemic of change?

Many researchers and wildlife organizations are urging scientists to use this unprecedented time for a close examination of the impact of human activity on the natural world. They argue that the information that researchers gather during this time could help improve conservation and biodiversity efforts.

It may also improve their ability to predict global environmental changes and potential cases of zoonoses, the transmission of disease from animals to humans. This could save millions of human lives, and economic losses, going forward.

Realistically, it will take years to assess exactly how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected wildlife, the environment, and the climate. Moreover, the impact of the pandemic on the natural world is unlikely to be linear. Research suggests that a reduction in some pollutants, including nitrogen oxides, may result in the rise of others, such as ozone.

Understanding how this pandemic has changed humans’ relationship with nature may be just as complex. But for now, these positive changes may be enough to give some people, and Mother Nature, the hope of a better future.

    Empathy

Empathy is the ability to recognize, understand, and share the thoughts and feelings of another person, animal, or fictional character. Developing empathy is crucial for establishing relationships and behaving compassionately. It involves experiencing another person’s point of view, rather than just one’s own, and enables prosocial or helping behaviors that come from within, rather than being forced.

Some surveys indicate that empathy is on the decline in the United States and elsewhere, findings that motivate parents, schools, and communities to support programs that help people of all ages enhance and maintain their ability to walk in each other’s shoes.

NAMATALE, Uganda — Dr. Eva Kabwongera’s job is to make sure life-saving Covid-19 vaccines reach Uganda’s 45 million people. On a recent morning, that journey took her to a tiny island that is home to less than 2,000 people.
The 40 doses Kabwongera brought with her to Namatale had traveled more than 3,000 miles via plane, truck, ferry and boat from Pune, India, to get to the outcrop in Africa’s vast Lake Victoria.
“We are delivering hope,” said Kabwongera, who is UNICEF’s immunization chief for Uganda, as she stepped into shallow water and walked to shore soaking wet. Dozens of small, smiling children greeted her. “The people there are waiting for it,” she added.
Dr. Eva Kabwongera says the country is struggling to finance deliveries to remote locations, such as Namatale. But hope does not defeat a pandemic — vaccines do. And Uganda doesn’t have enough to vaccinate even a tiny portion of its population. With the severe international shortage, Uganda and countries like it look set to have to wait to inoculate even its front-line health workers and most vulnerable groups to help stop Covid-19 and prevent the development of dangerous vaccine-resistant variants.
The result has been an extreme gap in vaccine distribution, with almost 1 in 4 people receiving a vaccine in high-income countries and a staggering 1 in more than 500 in low-income ones, according to the World Health Organization. Uganda, for example, has so far received only 864,000 vaccine doses — enough to fully vaccinate 400,000 people with two doses, or less than 1 percent of the country’s 45 million population. It wasn’t supposed to be like this.
