Elderly flight passenger throws coins into engine for ‘luck’, delays take-off for hours

China Southern Airlines Flight 380 was held up at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport after an elderly woman passenger caused a disruption, according to the airline’s official WeChat account. An investigation into the incident is under way.

Passengers boarding the flight reportedly saw an elderly woman throwing coins at the engine for “blessings” from the middle of the boarding staircase and alerted the crew.

Ground staff said the woman, who appeared to be about 80 and had limited mobility, was accompanied by her husband, daughter and son-in-law.

The captain was quoted as saying the metal, if sucked up by the engine, could have caused serious damage, including failure.

The flight was later given a green light and took off at 5.52pm, more than five hours late. It is scheduled to arrive in Guangzhou at 8.14pm.

    ZOMBIE NEUROSCIENCE

I don’t know if cockroaches dream, but I imagine if they do, jewel wasps feature prominently in their nightmares. These small, solitary tropical wasps are of little concern to us humans; after all, they don’t manipulate our minds so that they can serve us up as willing, living meals to their newborns, as they do to unsuspecting cockroaches. The story is simple, if grotesque: the female wasp controls the minds of the cockroaches she feeds to her offspring, taking away their sense of fear or will to escape their fate. What turns a once healthy cockroach into a mindless zombie it’s venom. Not just any venom, either: a specific venom that acts like a drug, targeting the cockroach's brain.

Should Twitter entertain millions with public arguments?

Comedian Janey Godley's tweets of a couple's train-bound row raise questions of how to protect our privacy in public places.

Imagem da questão de Inglês, UNICAMP 2017, Interpretação de texto | Reading comprehension

If the troubles of the two travellers had made it on to a newspaper first rather than a comedian's Twitter feed, would we be so relaxed about loss of privacy? I think perhaps not.
Social media has done so much for freedom of expression, it would be cruel if it actually leads to less social freedom for fear of having our every misstep, angry word or misbehaviour broadcast there for all to see.

Coral reefs are colorful underwater forests which teem with life and act as a natural protective barrier for coastal regions. The fishes and plants which call them home belong to some of the most diverse ― and fragile ― ecosystems on the planet. Higher sea temperatures from global warming have already caused major coral bleaching events. Bleaching occurs when corals respond to the stress of warmer temperatures by expelling the colorful algae that live within them. Increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide result in higher levels of CO² in the water, leading to ocean acidification, which is also a threat to coral. As the oceans become more acidic, the corals' ability to form skeletons through calcification is inhibited, causing their growth to slow. Increasing sea levels caused by melting sea ice could also cause problems for some reefs by making them too deep to receive adequate sunlight, another factor important for survival.

The modern F=ma form of Newton's second law occurs nowhere in any edition of the Principia even though he had seen his second law formulated in this way in print during the interval between the second and third editions in Jacob Hermann's Phoronomia of 1716. Instead, it has the following formulation in all three editions: A change in (1) ________ is proportional to the motive (2) ________ impressed and takes place along the (3) _________ line in which that force is (4)________. In the body of the Principia this law is applied both to (5) _______ cases, in which an instantaneous impulse such as from impact is effecting the change in motion, and to cases of (6) _______ action, such as the change in motion in the continuous deceleration of a body moving in a resisting medium. Newton thus appears to have intended his second law to be neutral between discrete forces (that is, what we now call impulses) and Hermann's Phoronomia of 1716. Read the information in Text 1, published by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

    Text 1

Monkeypox is nothing new, and the virus is endemic in several countries. But when cases started appearing beyond the expected places—and among people who didn’t travel to those endemic regions—researchers paid attention. [...] We’ve been aware of monkeypox for decades, and we have been interested in it mostly because it’s a cousin of smallpox. It is a related orthopoxvirus. The symptoms, although somewhat less severe, are quite similar to smallpox. In most cases, it causes relatively mild illness, meaning most people don’t end up in the hospital with it. [...] It spreads through large respiratory droplets and bodily fluids, so mostly it spreads through close or intimate contact with other people. It’s not highly contagious— nothing like COVID, for example. [...] The Monkeypox virus does tend to be a very stable virus. Unlike COVID, or flu that’s mutating constantly, the orthopoxviruses tend to be quite stable. I think the expectation is that the vaccines would still be effective.

According to Text 1, analyse whether the statements that follow are true (T) or false (F).

I ( ) Monkeypox is a recently discovered virus that has drawn researchers' attention.

II ( ) Monkeypox and smallpox are caused by viruses that belong to the same family.

III ( ) Usually, the symptoms of smallpox do not result in severe manifestations or health problems and are generally not serious, unlike those of the monkeypox.

IV ( ) The monkeypox virus mutates constantly. Covid and the flu viruses are likely to be quite stable.

V ( ) It's expected that the vaccines for monkeypox, smallpox, Covid, and the flu are effective because these viruses are relatively stable.

VI ( ) Some regions of the world experience ongoing levels of monkeypox rather than occasional outbreaks.

The statements I to VI are respectively:

Earth on its way to the ICU

There’s no way to deny it anymore. It has been proven through a report from the UN (United Nations) that, yes, it was man who made the Earth sick. And even if now the world, diagnosed, decides to reduce the damage that our presence here causes (which is not very likely) and decides to promote an extreme change in the economical structures, the Earth, still at that, will have its fever raised in 1.1◦C this century. Is that bad? But it is still bearable. Now if nothing is done, the world must prepare for a new class of refugees: the climatic. A heating of up to 6◦C would be forecasted. To have an idea, the Earth was only 5◦C colder in the Ice Age, which put an end to the Dinosaur Age. If the “dinos” couldn’t handle the shock, who’d think the humans would. Humans?

It is most probable, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Changes, that the Earth will be warmed 3◦C, which will cause phenomena such as thawing, hurricanes, droughts and tempests. The sea level, according to the report, may rise between 18 and 59 centimeters, making cities below sea level disappear.

In Brazil, the greatest impact would be on the Northeast, which could become a semi-desert. The Amazon would suffer due to lack of rain, affecting the entire rainforest, losing biodiversity. On the other hand, the intensity of the rain would impact the South-east. To the UN, The world must do the impossible to stagnate the intensity of the fever, so that the temperature increase does not exceed 2◦C. The warning has been given.

    Text 2

    White Blood

Doctors in Germany faced something they had never seen before. A 39-year-old patient’s blood was so pale and thick that it looked like milk. The medical condition was not a mystery. The (1) nearly comatose patient suffered from extreme hypertriglyceridemia. It is caused by too much fat in the blood.

Siphoning off the offending triglyceride molecules and returning the cleaned plasma to the body usually solves the problem. However, when staff tried the normal route, his viscous blood clogged the hospital’s filtering equipment. Not once, but twice. The problem was a record amount of triglycerides. Around 500 mg/dL is considered “high.” The man’s count read (2) an astonishing 18,000 mg/dL.

Desperate to save his life, doctors (3) resorted to an ancient remedy abandoned by modern medicinebloodletting. A good amount of the white gunk was drained and replaced with red blood cell concentrates and saline solution. It worked. (4) Although the cause of the severity is unknown, the patient’s genes, obesity, and irregular consumption of his diabetes medication might have combined to cause the mother of all hypertriglyceridemia cases.
