Online Education and Its Effective Practice: A Research Review

    By: Anna Sun, Xiufang Chen

Online education is here to stay and grow. The review of its history clearly shows that online education has developed rapidly, mostly as a result of Internet connectivity, advanced technology, and a massive market. It has evolved from 19th century correspondence programs to the 21st century’s vibrant and well-designed institutional online courses.

The fast development of the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) has produced numerous benefits to education. Online education provides potential opportunities to open new markets for higher education institutions. Many adult learners may enjoy the flexibility when they have to balance work, study, and family responsibilities. The wide range of various technology advancements used by universities’ online programs may promote the interaction between students and instructors, and among students at large. Finally, the upgraded technology and software may allow instructors, students, and university administrators to collect data, feedback, and evaluation regarding their online experiences.

We can anticipate that online education will continue to increase its presence and influence higher education through a vigorous process of reshaping, refining, and restructuring. It is unlikely, however, to replace entirely traditional higher education, but merely to be an alternative. But, because of its flexibility and accessibility, online education is gaining in popularity, especially for people who are otherwise unable to obtain education because of physical distance, schedule conflicts, and unaffordable costs.

EFFECTS OF SOCIAL ISOLATION AND LONELINESS

Mental and physical health are interconnected. Social isolation’s adverse health consequences range from sleeplessness to reduced immune function. Loneliness is associated with higher anxiety, depression, and suicide rates. Isolation and loneliness are also linked to poor cardiovascular health and cognitive function:

A study led by an epidemiologist at Newcastle University concluded that deficiencies in social relationships are associated with a higher risk for coronary heart disease and stroke.

A study published in The Journals of Gerontology concluded that loneliness was associated with a 40 percent increase in the risk of dementia.

Links between social isolation and serious medical conditions are not fully understood, but ample evidence supports the connection. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology linked social isolation with higher risks of premature mortality. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) points to loneliness and isolation as serious public health risks.

    Effects of Physical Distancing

Some effects of social isolation are specific to pandemics or other public health situations that require people to physically distance.

Loneliness and depression can go hand in hand with anxiety and fear about the dangers associated with the event that made physical distancing measures necessary. (???) Even people who are supportive of safetyrelated isolation and quarantine can experience frustration and irritability.

Food insecurity hits nearly 60% of Brazilians, study shows.

A study from the Brazilian Research Network on Food Sovereignty and Security released Wednesday showed that 58.7% of Brazilians lived with food insecurity, which replicated data not seen since 1993. In other words, 125.2 million people are affected by this issue, while 15% of the population, or about 33 million people, go hungry on a daily basis.

The document also highlighted that this phenomenon was a consequence of the country’s economic crisis and the ensuing labor market situation. The survey consisted of interviews conducted between November 2021 and April this year in 12,745 households across 577 municipalities in all states. Compared to 2018, the increase in the Brazilian population with food insecurity is 60% and since 2020 this figure grew by 7.2%.

It was the second National Survey on Food Insecurity in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil and showed that the daily victims of hunger increased from 19 to 33 million from 2021 to 2022. The most affected areas of the country are the North and Northeast, with 25.7% and 21% of the families involved, respectively. The report also revealed that 60% of households in rural areas are food insecure, with 18.6% of them in the most severe state. Hunger also affected 21.8% of the families of small agricultural producers.

The study also focused on investigating the relationship between food and race and confirmed that access to food is not a problem for 53.2% of the households of self-declared white people, but this percentage drops to 35% in the homes of self-declared black people. In these families, the percentage of people who suffer from a lack of food on a daily basis increased from 10.4% to 18.1%. The situation worsened in households managed by black women, of which 63% showed some degree of insecurity.

According to the survey, in 2022, one out of three Brazilians did something that caused shame, sadness or regret in order to obtain food. "We have gone back 30 years in the fight against hunger, it’s scary. But the current indignant movement is far from the indignation of 1993 with 32 million hungry people. We are inert as a society," explained Kiko Afonso, one of the members of the team to conduct the study.

ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE - British author

    By Philip K. Wilson

Arthur Conan Doyle, in full Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle, (born May 22, 1859, Edinburgh, Scotland—died July 7, 1930, Crowborough, Sussex, England), Scottish writer best known for his creation of the detective Sherlock Holmes — one of the most vivid and enduring characters in English fiction.

Conan Doyle began seven years of Jesuit education in Lancashire, England, in 1868. After an additional year of schooling in Feldkirch, Austria, Conan Doyle returned to Edinburgh. Through the influence of Dr. Bryan Charles Waller, his mother’s lodger, he prepared for entry into the University of Edinburgh’s Medical School. He received Bachelor of Medicine and Master of Surgery qualifications from Edinburgh in 1881 and an M.D. in 1885 upon completing his thesis, “An Essay upon the Vasomotor Changes in Tabes Dorsalis.” While a medical student, Conan Doyle was deeply impressed by the skill of his professor, Dr. Joseph Bell, in observing the most minute detail regarding a patient’s condition. (01)___. Other aspects of Conan Doyle’s medical education and experiences appear in his semiautobiographical novels, The Firm of Girdlestone (1890) and The Stark Munro Letters (1895), and in the collection of medical short stories Round the Red Lamp (1894). TEXT II

Veggies You Can Regrow From Discarded Roots

    Patrick Phillips

When it comes to cooking with healthy, fresh ingredients, we always end up facing the same issue: what to do with all of the roots we chop off of our veggies? Instead of tossing them in the trash, there’s actually something quite useful you can do with them, and it’ll save you a good chunk of change.
Regrowing green onions has become quite popular, and it’s easy to understand why: it’s very simple and fun to check on its growth progress on a daily basis. It’s also a great way to help avoid food waste. However, there are plenty of vegetables you can regrow for yourself at home using scraps.
       Green Onion
Let’s start with the basics: green onions. These are the fastest plants to regrow and also the easiest. To do so, put the root and 1 inch of the white part in a bowl or jar, then fill it with enough water to cover up to halfway up the white part of the onion. Change out the water every 2 to 3 days. You’ll notice it growing within a day and after a week, you’ll have greens that you can use!
        Romaine Lettuce
You can regrow romaine lettuce and also other lettuces by placing the roots of it in a jar filled with at least 1 inch of water. Leave for a few days until it begins to grow, then transfer the roots into soil to continue growing the thriving plant.
       Cabbage
You can regrow cabbage in the same way that you regrow lettuce. Simply save a stump of the cabbage with its roots and place it in 1 inch of water. Then transfer the sprouting leaves into soil.
       Leeks
Since leeks are actually directly related to green onions, they can be regrown using the same method. Place the root and about 2 inches of the white part in a jar with water that reaches about halfway up the white part. These will take a bit longer to regrow, but don’t give up! Make sure to keep changing out the water every 2 or 3 days.
       Carrot Tops
Cut a carrot at the top (the root) and place the piece, cut side-down, in a bowl of water. The leaves of the carrots will grow as opposed to the carrot itself, however, these leaves can be used in salads, be used as a garnish, or can even be put into a pesto. Simply change the water every few days.
       Celery
Celery can be regrown in the same way as the cabbage and romaine. Place the root end of the stalk in 1 inch of water. When the leaves will begin to sprout, wait about a week in order for the celery to become stronger. Make sure you change the water every few days. Once this process is done, you can replant the celery in soil. Celery leaves can also be used in salads.

    Are you speaking English?

    They swim in my mind,

    Comprehension is different,

    If I understood you

    If that all made sense,

    Then maybe I'd seem
